Lever Review (2026): Tested & Rated

4.4/5 our editorial rating · Last tested 2026-06-09

Best-in-class CRM for building and nurturing passive talent pools — a combined ATS and CRM with automated sequences.

OUR TAKE

How we assess Lever

We look at Lever on the things that decide a buy — its pipeline, automation, sourcing, pricing and what users say in aggregated reviews. Where we've used a tool ourselves across Venture Harbour's portfolio companies, we lean on that experience too. The aim is a view of how Lever holds up in real hiring, not how it reads on a feature list.

✓ PROS
  • Best-in-class CRM for passive talent pools
  • Combined ATS and CRM in one platform
  • Talent-nurture campaigns and automated sequences
  • Strong for proactive, relationship-led hiring
  • Mature integrations and reporting
✕ CONS
  • Feature development has slowed since the acquisition
  • ATS customization trails Greenhouse and Ashby
  • Custom, non-transparent pricing

Our verdict on Lever

Lever's edge is its CRM. If your hiring is proactive — building relationships with passive candidates months before a role opens — Lever is the best tool here for it. The combined ATS and CRM means a candidate you sourced last quarter is still warm and tracked, and the nurture campaigns and automated sequences keep that pipeline alive without manual chasing.

For a talent team that thinks in pipelines rather than postings, that matters more than another point of ATS polish. It is built for the recruiter who is always sourcing, not just reacting to applications.

Two reservations. Feature development has visibly slowed since the acquisition, so it is not moving as fast as Ashby, and its ATS customization trails both Greenhouse and Ashby. Pricing is custom and non-transparent, running from roughly $4,000 a year well into six figures for large teams. For reactive hiring or early-stage companies it is the wrong fit; for proactive enterprise talent teams it is excellent. Confirm current pricing with Lever.

Lever in depth

Pipeline & automation

Lever scores 7.8/10 for ease of use — workable, though it takes a little learning. Hiring automation is yes, so stage changes can fire rejection emails, screening questionnaires and manager nudges automatically. We weigh this on how the pipeline and automation actually work in practice, not on a feature list.

Sourcing & candidate reach

Sourcing and candidate-database access is no, so Lever tracks people who apply rather than helping you go find passive candidates. Sourcing reach is adequate but not the reason to buy this tool.

Collaboration & reporting

Lever handles collaborative hiring well, with scorecards and feedback that leave a record. Interview scheduling is no and a branded career site is yes.

Pricing & integrations

Lever uses custom pricing with no free tier. Integrations and API access are yes, so it slots into an existing HR stack. Pricing shown is approximate — always confirm current pricing on the vendor's site.

Who Lever is (and isn't) for

Best for: Enterprise teams that hire proactively and nurture passive candidates over time. Where it's the wrong call: feature development has slowed since the acquisition; ats customization trails greenhouse and ashby; custom, non-transparent pricing. If those trade-offs don't touch how you hire, Lever earns its 84/100 Index Score.

Lever FAQ

What makes Lever different from other ATS tools?

Its CRM. Lever combines an ATS with a best-in-class candidate-relationship manager, so it excels at building and nurturing passive talent pools through automated sequences rather than just tracking active applicants.

Who should not use Lever?

Reactive hiring teams and early-stage companies. Lever’s value is in proactive, relationship-led hiring, and its pricing (from around $4k/yr, custom) is hard to justify for occasional roles.
